The book that Jim Hadfield was referring to was The Little Black Doll by Enid Blyton, published in 1937. She also wrote The Three Golliwogs, published in 1944, in which the main characters were called Golly, Woggie and N . . . yes, that word again.

Blyton went on to become one of most popular children's writers ever. There's no justice in the world!
