These lists confirm that the changes go far beyond what would be necessary to make ambiguous English words comprehensible to American readers. When young I never had difficulty reading American books - only a feeling of smug superiority that I was able to spell correctly! - I'm sure that young American readers will feel just the same.

Somebody has simply over-ridden the author's intentions just for the sake of doing so, changing the actual meaning in a number of places. It seems strange that a successful author stood for it.

By no stretch of the imagination can the English 'One Hundred' be translated into 'One Thousand' in American. Billion maybe has different meanings (and sadly we seem to have adopted yours), but not Hundred.

Heaven, please save AR from this.
