I agree that WD could make an excellent film - but what if the director, script writer etc decide to modernise it or add more drama or whatever it is that happens to many films based on book 'adaptations'?
It depends on the contract. If the literary executors are firm in their demands, then either those demands will be met or the film won't be made. The Lewis Estate apparently spent a great deal of time insisting on having things their way.
The opening of Narnia- London in the Blitz and the children being evacuated was excellently done, and was definitely not in the book. One for the modern director/script writer, etc.
