All I've read of Pullman is his trilogy His Dark Materials (Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass; it's curious that in this series, like Potter, the first book has a different title in the USA). I read it because so many critics and such said "adults who like Potter should be ashamed of themselves, try this instead."

It didn't really work for me. There are some clever ideas in it, but he didn't really make me care about the characters. I suppose it just shows how personal taste in books is. And he does seem to have something of an obsession with airships coming down in flames.

I disagree with Jock's statement that Pullman is a cross between AR and Roald Dahl. AR is quietly humourous, Dahl is funny in a more obvious way, but Pullman is never humorous. I saw a TV interview in which he says he tried it and discovered he was no good at it, so he stopped trying.

In reply to Mike Dennis on Agatha Christie's style (may be in a different thread, but I read 'em all flat in "Check Messages with Names"): You may be right, I haven't read any since my early teens more than 40 years ago. I'll try some again some time.
