Pullman's Dark Materials Trilogy is very serious. It challenges the reader in the same manner as Jostein Gaarder's Sophie's World. It's also, no pun intended, but I can't find a better word, very dark.

But it was the Sally Lockhart books that I was refering to. The wicked villains are portrayed with Dahlesque relish and Victorian London is described with a Ransomish love of authentic period detail. And Sally Lockhart is a Victorian NB if ever ever there was one. Humour? Well you can't have everything!
