GA - short bio from Vikipedia.

Maria Turner was the only child of George Turner, a wealthy indutrialist and Maria Cavendish-Bentinck a cousin of the Earl of Portland. Her parents were too busy with their own lives to do much parenting and she had few childhood companions of her own age. She was educated by a series of authoritarian governesses who taught her French, embroidery and the pianoforte. She was a disappointment to her parents turning down a series of prospective suitors who had excellent social credentials.

She fell in love with the dashing Arthur Jolys at the age of 26, their favourite pastime was picniking on an island on one of the lakes in the Lake District. Her father was enraged by the romance and arranged for Jolys to be sent out to the front during the First Boer War. Jolys was killed in the Battle of Schuinshoogte. He was mentioned in despatches for coming to the aid of a wounded colleague while under enemy fire.

Maria Turner never married.

I have to admit that as I get older, the G.A. doesn't seem anything like as frightful as she once did. . . . .

Appreciating the GA is like appreciating spinach, something that grows on you with age.
