I found the trilogy for about $4 (used) on amazon.com. A bargain.
I will see how various grandkids in the 7-12 yr range like this.

Oh dear. Now a word of warning.

Take care with the Dark Materials Trilogy. They are not really suited to 7-12 year olds. They are ideal for teenagers who have stopped reading, grown out of rebelling and are beginning to question their part in the Universe. They are so challenging that the first director who was working on making Northen Lights into a film has resigned! See this BBC News item. On the other hand my 16 year old daughter (who hardly reads anything) read them all back to back and declared them much superior to Potter.

The Sally Lockhart Quartet are ideal for a 12 year old. Good luck with the stories!
