A couple of points almost but not quite relevant to the question! You may know them already but msybe there's someone here who doesn't.
1. 1937 was a good year for children's books, as it saw the publication of both WDM and The Hobbit. (And The Far-Distant Oxus.)
2. Tolkien greatly prized a letter he got from AR, in which AR called himself 'a humble hobbit-fancier', but criticised some elements, such as Gandalf calling Bilbo a 'little man'.
