From WH CH14:

Two days later, a postcard from the doctor came to Holly Howe at breakfast-time. "Collect the gang. Inspection of jaws at 9 a.m."

Imagine writting a letter to be posted that sets up an appointment for a time that is only an hour or so after the expected delivery time.

Letter was delivered at breakfast-time; appointment was for 9 a.m.

Somebody sure has a lot of faith in the timelyness of postal deliveries. With that kind of service, no wonder that Beckfoot and Col. Jolys (and assumedly the local Police) have telephones, whereas none of the other places mentioned seem to have that facility. That kind of delivery is almost as fast as EMAIL, which has to wait until the receiver actually bothers to logon and check out his incoming mail, which itself may be an event that happens with several days in between. In that case, it is faster for the postman to ring the bell and hand over a letter.

Makes one wonder why the GA in PM actually bothered to send a telegram, considering the cost, as apparently that is only slightly fasater than the postal delivery service.

Those were the days...
