Ed one must remember it was local mail, from where ever GA lived it may take longer. Telegrams were very quick.
However in the UK when I lived there we had two deliveries a day one usually by breakfast time or before, then one midday.
The post boxes (mail boxes) where picked up several times a day. Unfortunately I think this is no longer true.
