Letters would have gone to the Mediterranean ports by rail. There must have been a huge amount of official and private mail for the Mediterranean Fleet and arrangements must have been in place to ensure quick transit to Malta.
This should have taken much less than eight days - but Commander Walker's ship could well have been at sea when the letter first arrived.
