The ginger beers I've encountered have always been much more strongly flavoured than any ginger ales (quite the opposite of my experience with real beers and ales). Anticipating the next question, Old Tyme is one US company that makes a ginger beer, and there's another brand, which has Jamaica in the name and is available in some natural food stores. I don't know if they make it across the border into Canada, but it's worth a try; also British shops or some of the vendors at Scottish games may carry a ginger beer.
