I think the original question that started this thread was, regardless of the relationship to real-life geography, can the maps in the 'lake' books be regarded as a fully accurate, to-scale representation of the fictional geography described in the text?

My belief is that though the maps are pretty good in general, they cannot be regarded as to scale in all details. They are basically sketch maps. In the past somebody tried to work out the length of the fictional lake by scaling up from the representation of some small detail (Swallowdale, I think), and when I suggested that this process should not be trusted too literally, the person concerned told me off sharply for blatantly refusing to believe sufficiently in maps that came from the author's own pen.
