I have thought for a long time that the GA was the one with real money and would be tolerated in the hope that when she died she would leave a sizeable inheritance.
Reading from novels of the period gives the impression that many, sometimes difficult, relatives were tolerated for this reason. The widening scope of estate duty may have cut down the size of these inheritances.
I think, even today, one hears overtones of "look after Aunt Flossie she is worth a few bob".
Hope and greed are universal drivers for most of us.
