Peter, I wasn't going to come back to this, since I agree it it really isn't much to do with Ransome, but as you bring it up again; I think that you are being extremely innocent about the ways of the aristocracy and of the 'Diana and Charles' set. My knowledge isn't personal but comes directly from people who were involved both in reporting on them, and were themselves involved. For my sins I once had to make a post mortem programme about Diana. The only surprising thing was that she didn't expect what she found when she joined the royal family, although she finally got involved herself. Her date of death has little to do with it- the aristocracy have throughout history been above bourgeois ideas of morality and mostly they still are.

And where did you dig up this coal in the bath?
