This is the day I agree with Peter H! Largely anyway.

The Farlands, the Dudgeons, the Blacketts and the Walkers (and the Cullums for that matter) were beyond doubt comfortably off - as is quite clear from their life styles.

But none were wealthy as understood then or now.

I don't think that the possession of a Yare and Bure One-design indicates any great wealth for Mr Farland. One of these would cost at a guess about £10,000 today and a comparable sum then, not cheap but affordable for a country solicitor then and now. And as a Partner - evidently a Senior Partner in his family firm, he could no doubt take time off if he chose unless - as in Coot Club - there was specific legal work requiring his presence.

As I have said, I don't think that the Hullabaloos were necessarily rich either. Unpleasantness is and was not the prerogative of any one class (Oh dear, I have said that word)
