Wasn't Cook live-in? Ransome was abut as explicit on her status as he was on Mrs. McGinty, the housekeeper's. For that matter, if Cook was strictly a cook, who did the cleaning at Beckfoot? ISTR mention of the maid dancing in the hall when the GA left in SD, but Cook was going to have to change the pillowcase Nancy spilled paint on in PM. And I don't think school in Paris would be much different from a Public (boarding) School in the UK cost-wise.
