When the "facts" of the timeline conflict with the "facts" recorded in the story (e.g., years noted in the books, Vicky/Bridget's age) which set is to be held sacred? The timeline represents his retrospective look at the earlier books' sequencing.

Since SA was apparently written as a "one-off", and the additional books came to be as much by popular, and publisher, demand, as from Ransome's "need" to continue the books, the internal chronological consistency of the later books argues that the deviations between SA and the rest of the "canon" are due, at least in part, to that.
