Alan Hakim is surely right in saying that we should go with the Ransome version of the time sequence – who else are we to believe? - but unfortunately the book The Best of Childhood seems also to have got confused. It says:

Swallows and Amazons makes it clear that the treaty was signed in the month of August 1929, and Swallowdale states that Kanchenjunga was climbed on August 11 1931. However, some years later, Ransome wrote the following [chronology], and instructed Cape to change the date in Swallowdale to 1930, but they did not do so.’

In AR’s chronology which is set out after the above quote, Swallows and Amazons is dated ‘Summer 1930’, and Swallowdale is dated ‘1931’. Should not the above quote have said that Ransome asked the date in Swallows and Amazons, NOT Swallowdale, to be changed to 1930?
