Whilst I think that Charles's advice is rather wise, I wouldn't want to close down altogether a discussion on the general question of reproducing TARS publications on CD and I certainly sympathise with Harry's view. The two big stumbling blocks are (1) time and costs of preparing the CD; (2) protection of copyright.

(1) the costs problem could be overcome by asking for pre-payment - as soon as sufficient pre-paid orders are received, you go ahead. As to the time - this will have to be put in by . . .yes, the Publications Committee, who like most TARS volunteers, don't get a huge amount of encouragement from Tarboard as this thread shows (Sorry to hammer this point yet again, Harry, but if you want something from someone, isn't it a good idea to encourage them?)

(2) is more difficult. Even if clearances could be obtained from all authors, there is the problem that material on CD can be copied in a few seconds and freely disseminated. Yes, you can manufacture 'read-only' CDs, but there are ways round that for the technically-minded.

It is because of (2) that I personally would favour republication in hard copy form. But just a word of warning - I have copies of all TARS publications since the Society started. A great deal of the material in them is dated, in that it refers to activities at that time. Much of the research has been overtaken. I think the editor of any republication will have to pick and choose. However, I agree with Harry that 'Distilled Enthusiasms' is a prime candidate if ever republication were to be considered.
