As a near-charter member, now extending into 3 generations,
I find the publictns. and activities admirable. I haven't
actually shown up (or dragged spouses, kids etc, to)any
of them, but just reading about them provides hrs of
entertainment. The Lit weekend at St John's sorely tempts
me. These activities potentially
provide a focal pt. & UK human contact for Anglophiles, & expats.
(temporary or otherwise) whose relatives and friends may have drifted
away. A TARS event could set a cap on 2-3 weeks of Henley,
Cambridge, West End/Regl Theatre, massive purchases of china, wollens,
and books. So what if the kids/(or, now, grandkids) don't really
appreciate Ransome? They will get their turn to bore their kids.
TARS could support a Lakeland (etc) Hotel/self-catering/camping/sights
website, rather more detailed and candid than usual, with TARRY
references. (Linked to Dr Gates excellent UK pages, e.g.) It's up
to me to set one up, & I will. I recommend the Garden House, Fowl
Ing Lane, Kendal. They will bring yr breakfast up to your room
(Yan, Tan, tether etc), and the staff are wonderful.
