from alan truelove - oh, I dont know...
I've been going to the same spots since I coerced my Dad into taking me
camping over 50 yrs ago at the age of 10 or so .. looking for Beckfoot
(not there of course, where was TARS when I needed them?)
disclosed Wray Castle, and the delightful magic woods
and rocky beach just S. of there (We now take our water shoes, bought
specially for the purpose!!), which are generally deserted
(3-4 cars at most).
A recent issue of 'Cumbria' sets forth a Duddon 4-hr circle walk,
where the author says, he didnt see a single Human being!
(This walk is next on my agenda). My son & daughter-in-law
(the latter w. some whinging) climbed
Kachenjunga the hard way all the way from Torver (known in my family
as Torpey after a well known DC IT Manager) and back, and didnt see
anybody on the 'flat' part. Try finding the Dog's Home - you
won't see ANYBODY in, e.g., June. All this, and 10 mins. away
you can be tucking into Beef/beer pie, buying intellectual books
in Ambleside, swimming more comfrtably at the Wordsworth in Grasmere
or the public pool, and you can shuffle off the teens with a few quid to
patronize the Movie/Pizza or hang around the more respectable pubs--
(Brits are remarkable trusting of US College, laminated,
ID's, say no more). Or, better, give them their AmEx card and
let them loose on the YHA's and SYHA's & the Cumberland bus system.
Thanks to the hard-working Lakes waitresses, Gondala & tour boat
operators, .. your salty and friendly demeanor is a constant delight.
