If you want to sample the "atmosphere" of the books, there are probably two places worth visiting on a short stay. Go to Bowness on Windermere and walk round the bay, possibly even hire a boat for an hour or so, to experience the bustle and location of "Rio" with its superb views through the islands to the hills in the north.

Then for a bit of peace and quiet by contrast, drive round to Coniston to see Peel Island. Either by boat - I think "Coniston Launch" do trips there - or just drive down the east shore of the lake. You can walk through the wood that is on the shore facing the island and see just what a perfect "Wild Cat Island" it is. The view of it from the steamer pier just to the northeast is good for photos, too!

Have fun.

Cheers
Patrick
