As I have explained on this site before, I have had two wells dowsed on our couple of acres of Canadian Shield; one with the traditional forked twig, one with a metal bar. Both yielded water where predicted. The twig specialist (a high-school teacher) claimed the twig itself reacted violently, a la Titty. It did nothing for me.

In discussion with a local recently, we speculated that maybe dowsers unconsciously spotted minute variations in terrain and vegetation (like Dick noting a particular kind of reed) that caused their fingers, expecting the twig to react, to move. We thought it might be interesting to blindfold a dowser and see if he/she came up with the same locations.

The question (being "scientific", of course) is -- would there have been water even if our wells had been drilled at random? Is dowsing like astrology -- you only hear of the predictions that came out, while everyone forgets the failures?

Anyone willing to give me large enough grant to follow this up in Dick Callum fashion?
