I don't know that end of the lake very well - is there anywhere a native war canoe can be hired?

The other possibility is (again weather permitting) walk up Coniston Old Man (Kankenjunga (sp?))This is not a particularly strenuous walk if you are used to hill walking, but in January don't do it unless the weather is very settled (I was up there in snow 2 years ago and was glad that I, unlike the swallows & Amazons, had an ice axe with me)
