There are more things in heaven and earth, Peter H, than are dreamt of in your philosophy. . . .I want to believe.

I sort of knew someone would come up with that argument. The problem with it is, that if you follow it through you end up believing anything you are told. Forgive me, Richard, but a couple of Jehovah's Witnesses said much the same to me a few days ago when they called. They wanted me 'to believe'. I was not prepared to do so. The 'email' phenomenon is not a true analogy - it is the development of a technology unknown to our ancestors. Map dowsing involves no technology, because there are no fixed parameters and a very large human involvement. It is more akin to a 'laying on of hands' to cure a sick person (which has also been claimed to operate remotely). Identifying possible locations for water on a good geological map involves no mystique nor dowsing - just the appropriate knowledge and experience.

There are times, admittedly, when science and magic are hard to tell apart, but as intelligent beings (one hopes) we have to keep trying. And I know where I stand. And so do those JWs.
