The idea that science develops steadily like a plant is a notion propagated by bad teachers and poor scientists. Great lumps of 'established science' have been abandoned and rewritten. Consider the theory that a burning substances loses plogiston. (No, it combines with oxygen.) Or that an atom is the smallest unit of matter. (No, we are still in the process of discovering new sub atomic particles. Then we have the demise of Bohr's model of the atom and its replacement by quantum mechanics... .
