Vigorous boiling of river water for the appropriate time (depending on altitude) will kill off the bacteria leaching off floating dead bodies, such as, sheep, dogs and Tarboard members (who have met the exit criteria discussed lower down this thread). However, nasty chemicals, including those with a half life, need a more robust approach. Unfortunately in filtering out the bad chemicals we also filter out the good.

A challenge for Dick!
