Sydney Water had cause to build a water treatment plant at Prospect a few years ago. If my memory serves me correctly the plant become infected with cryto-speridium and half of Sydney ended up boiling their water.

Lots of people drink rainwater from roof drainage which has all sort of nasties in it - humans can cope with some contamination levels.
