Possibly I spend too much time reading British literature, but I'm reasonably certain I've also heard "hip, hip - hurrah!" in real life America, both as an actual cheer with the "HURRAH" chorused after the cheerleader gave the "hips," and as a rather sarcastic muttering. Three cheers are even more common, though less as actual cheers than as an expression. For example, I spent any amount of time in Girl Scout camp singing a song that that began "Three cheers for ___ ." (You filled in the person/thing to be cheered in every verse.) Come to think of it, there's also one of those camp songs with actions in which the last line includes a 'hip, hip, hurrah.'
