I also remember using, and hearing used, "three cheers" and "hip hip hurra[h|y]", including, in Scouts, "with a southern accent" ("Hip hip hurray, y'all"). It's conceivable, absent more research, that the "Three Cheers" arrived over here wth the "Winnie the Pooh" books:

Three Cheers for Pooh
(For Who?) For Pooh

Three Cheers for Bear
(For Where?) For Bear!

following his rescue of Piglet from the flood.
