is there any reason to suppose that AR would give us any thing other than a sense of ambiguity about Captain Flint as there is more than enough evidence that he was always questioning his own success or failure. ER always seems to have had both a heavy and influential role in how he saw his work and i must suspect himself. otherwise the title of "the local veto" would never have arisen. Also despite his later success it seems very plain that his mohter did not originally, and his father never would have, approved of his vocation seeing him as perhaps too like his paternal grandfather for comfort. maybe this as tolkien put it around the same tim eccentricity tolerated in the rich rather than admired is a key to Ar and Captain Flint both in and out of the lake district. re sammy; one must remember that to nNancy being raised with sammy's mother as a nanny or governness she probably sees him as more of an officious older brother (courtesey) rather than a genuine law enforcer.
