My thoughts, for what they are worth, are that all the child characters in the Swallows and Amazons books represent a range of attitudes to book-learning (and different kinds of book learning). Dick and, to a lesser extent, John and Roger have an interest in and respect for mathematics and physical science. Titty and Dorothea, and to a lesser extent, Peggy, share a love of literature. Others are harder to categorise - what kind of student is Susan? Port? Starboard? Tom Dudgeon? The Death or Glories? The Mastodon?
The message is that regardless of what kind of student you are (or even if you are not a great student, what "book-learning" appeals to you), the elements of adventure and activity and attitude that AR advocates in the books are suitable for all kinds of children and are forces that bring otherwise disparate groups together.
