I agree with John, a solid fuel (coal more likely than wood) kitchen range which is burning all the time and keeps a tank full of water hot.

To answer Peter's earnest questions, my opinions are:
Telephone wire overhead, back then no one bothered putting them underground.
No Damp proof course for a building ofthat age.
