I agree with Peter H - property is not psychologically right. But AR provided the answer in SD - the GA brought up both Jim and Molly Turner and that had a long-lasting effect ("frightened" is how one of the Amazons puts it)on both of them and on their attitude to the GA. That effect on two leading local personages is sufficient to explain the attitude to the GA of the other people in the district, especially as the GA has a strong and domineering personality (remember how she dealt with Tommy Jolys).
