Two reasonably courteous and considerate children completely disarmed her.

I often wonder what would have happened if 'Nancy had just let things slide' The GA would certainly have been angry to start with, but 'Nobody ever was angry with Dorothea' (WD) Dick and Dot would have met her on her own terms, Nancy and Peggy would perforce have had to fall into line, the GA might well have empathised with the D's. and everything might have turned out quite happily, with in the end the GA writing to Mrs Blackett about how wise she had been to choose friends for her girls who were clearly such a good influence.
