There was some talk earlier of ownership of Beckfoot and the comment was made that there was no usable land with it, rendering it almost a white elephant or a potential millstone.
This got me thinking as to where did the readies come from to pay for...Nice lakeside houses, holidays -often away, sailing dinghys, schooners, camping, houseboats, launches...
We know that the Walkers were funded by H.M. navy, and the D's by university research fees, but the Blackets -? was Molly living on Bob's pension? What occupation could Bob B. have had that led him to buy a place like Beckfoot? He must have been pretty well off from working at Something - Somewhere!
And 'Uncle Jim', he spent a lot of time 'gallivanting' and persuing his whims in various corners of the globe, coming back laden with curiosities. He was happy to fund huge picnics (WH) and boat repairs (SD). Was all this paid for from his writings? If so, he must have been one V. successful writer!
Any thoughts or clues that I have missed in the stories?
