Interesting thought, though, the bell didn't work and that was where it was put until someone got round to fixing it. The wires across the yard are a bit of a problem though.

My grand parents and then parents hung a camel bell by the back door (different houses) and it was rung to call people in from the garden when a meal was ready, like a dinner gong but outside.
My other grandparents house had an internal electric bell system which had a bell push in each room which rang in the kitchen area and a box with a bunch of windows in each of which was a little flap that wagged sideways to indicate which bell push had been operated.

Perhaps the rich Blacketts had a bell system to call the groom in from the stables?
