Richard's hypothesis is entirely plausible. In 1988 I stayed with my family in an impressive mansion above Esthwaite Water. Broomriggs had been built by a Manchester cotton magnate as a summer retreat and is now divided into rentable accommodation. It is considerable bigger than Beckfoot -- more cotton mills, one presumes!
