Ice yachts and Puddleducks

Although I was always able to accept that there were such things (after all, AR said there were, and drew pictures of them in WH), ice yachts never seemed very real. Here is a picture on that other (woodworking forum) board that gives a good idea of what a modern ice yacht looks like.

The thread that this item currently concludes is a fascinating description of building a workable dinghy from non-marine plywood, using polytarp for the sail and not spending too much money.

I wonder whether, rather than building a Swallow replica, TARS should adopt this concept (called the Puddleduck - which ties in nicely with that other Lakes District author, Beatrix Potter) and encourage people (especially families with children) to build "low tech" sailing boats to this formula. A TARS Puddleduck regatta would be fun.

The next idea would be to work out a way to run a worldwide Puddleduck regatta, so TARS all over the world would sail their Puddleducks on the same day in a virtual regatta. I think this would be a great way to encourage a feeling of togetherness for all TARS, wherever they may be.
