It really doesn't matter. At the time the books were written, my grandfathers were working as an East End tailor and a Hounslow bus-driver. Had they met the Blacketts they would have considered them incredibly well-off, but that didn't stop my father enjoying the books. (Actually, this is where the argument falls flat. Dad says that he certainly read five or six of the books, but he didn't enjoy them and went back to Sexton Blake, Billy Bunter and building radios.)
