I'm a ship's mate, myself. I have really appreciated Susan's character,
and Peggy's, too. They clarify the ship's mate role and give it the
importance it deserves. Many ship's mates lack an appreciation of the
true importance of their job aboard. I like it better now and I'm better
at it.
Susan was probably ready for romance. (I always wondered if she married
Eric Hiscock.) It did not seem as though AR was ready to write romance.
