The 'polar bear' would have been on the correct side of the lake, as sheep on the Cumbrian fells generally 'know' which is their grazing area (or 'heaf'). Of course, some do stray, and all these are returned to their right heaf once a year. The point about the crag-fast sheep is that the snow would probably eradicate the sheep's feeling for where it was, so full marks to AR there. (Mind you, they get stuck in summer as well.)
