Although Ed suggested that Coots in the North was intended as an afterthought, I think that chronologically, Ransome started Coots in the north after writing The Picts and the Martyrs but abandoned it infinished as he did the other book about the river (due to Evgenia's disapproval?). Great Northern? apparently originated with a letter from a fan Myles North who inspired most of the plot.

Perhaps Ransome's own creative juices were running a bit thin by then and he needed to be push started.
