In my knackered old paperback edition there is no sign on the door in the picture where the D's first see The Dogs Home, but in a later illustration, the one where Nancy turns up in the middle of the night, there is definitely lettering on the door she has opened.Whether there is an apostrophe or not within the shading on the door is up to the imagination - certainly the lettering is far from being clear, at least in my edition.
