No, it's not the "tumbled down" picture, but in the text on the page after it:
Somebody, once upon a time, had painted the words "THE DOG'S HOME" in big clumsy letters on the door.

Right. By 1948 they'd fixed that, as you said.

And in the illustration mentioned by Prue, 'Wet and Piebald in the Doorway', you can see the writing on the door but it diplomatically lacks an apostrophe. (JC 1948 p. 175) How is it in your edition?

This may be mere train spotting, but it is hugely enjoyable...
