I'm afraid I'm with Dorothea on this. I got one-third of the way through ROTS and then gave up. There were two things that put me off - the complications of tides and sands and strands and charts which I just couldn't understand. Maybe you have to be a sailor to appreciate the book?
The other thing was the very 'period' 'alpha-male' characterisation. Whether this is what put Dorothea off I don't know, but it might have been.
