In re-reading Big Six I noticed a reference to Dr. Dudgeon putting a "pat of mustard" into a wooden spoon to make his own salad dressing at the supper table.

I have only used, and seen used, "pat" as a solid, pre-measured piece/slice of butter. Is "pat" in this usage supposed to be equivalent to what I would call a "dab"?
