I was surprised to learn that some readers gave up on ROTS. I don't usually like thrillers and I don't much care for what Peter H called "the very 'period' 'alpha-male' characterisation" and which I would call the "imperialistic sub-text" but I thought ROTS was just so well written that I couldn't put it down. Maybe it's becasue I first read it (inspired by the reference in WH) at an impressionable age. Could anyone explain Childers politics to me? Was he an imperialist or an Irish Nationalist or a Unionist, or what?
We had some sort of poll a while ago and I think John Buchan and Neville Shute came top of TARBOADISTAS' pops. I have problems with both of them but they both have a cedrtain readability.
