Definitely! Forget the complete loads of codswallop that were Dr Doolittle the films(the pushmi-pullyus were worse than any five year old could have developed) - Hugh Lofting wrote character-filled, very un-PC books about a fat little doctor who lived in Puddleby in England and who stopped being a people doctor because the animals needed him more. He was taught how to speak animal by his old parrot Polynesia and he becomes the champion for neglected and abused animals everywhere.
There is a dozen or so of his books and each one is a pearl.
